Substation Automation

Much of the intelligence of SCADA is in the equipment located in the substation. And often when SCADA systems aren’t delivering the value that utilities had hoped for, it’s because of issues with configuration and communications of equipment in the substation.

Our engineers frequently support our clients by fixing and upgrading their substation equipment to provide the automation that it is capable of. Our programming and testing procedures are thorough and our understanding of the system as a whole allows us to provide you with a fully working solution, including:

  • Relay and Controls Programming: We can help you to understand how best to capture fault targets and currents to greatly aid operations in restoration. We frequently work with SEL, Eaton/Cooper, and others.
  • RTU and PLC Programming: Our team has worked extensively with SEL-RTAC, Novatech and upgraded many legacy Telvent and GE RTUs. We frequently implement controls with Rockwell and Automation Direct PLCs and more.
  • DG and Wind Farm Interconnects: Our team has helped many utilities add generation of several MW safely into their distribution systems accounting for reverse power flow, anti-islanding and direct transfer trip schemes. We have also helped deploy automation in many transmission connected wind farms including integrations to MISO and PJM.
  • Substation Communications: We commonly interconnect legacy serial RS-232 and RS-485 devices with modern Ethernet equipment. We understand copper and fiber communications in the substation. Our engineers can design systems properly from the ground up as well as test and troubleshoot issues you are having.

PSE provides a breadth of services from initial feasibility investigations through deployment and ongoing support. In all that we do, our goal is to inform you to make the best decisions and equip you to maintain and run your system well.
