Design

Utilities have ongoing design needs, and PSE’s Design team will deliver the perfect solution. PSE can provide on-demand or prearranged contracted services of our experienced and highly trained personnel for projects large or small. We employ the latest technologies in order to be efficient and accurate, stay current with leading industry standards, allow for seamless transfer of project files, and provide clear communication with our clients. Our design work can be found throughout North America, including capital improvement projects, voltage conversions, FEMA mitigation and replacement projects, subdivision layouts, new feeders, line extensions, and service upgrades.

Transmission Line Design

PSE utilizes several state-of-the-art computer programs in the process of designing transmission line facilities including PLS-CADD, PLS-Pole, Southwire Sag10, as well as programs developed in-house utilizing Microsoft Excel. Our staff can work with your current design specifications or create new standards based on the project requirements. Once the standard for design is determined, the PSE design staff will model structures and perform a complete 3D analysis using the PLS software package.

The deliverables for any PSE transmission line design include:

  1. Plan and profile drawings
  2. Construction staking sheets
  3. Structure assembly drawings
  4. Conductor sag and tension tables
  5. Material specifications
  6. Design book with supporting calculations, including span limitations based on required ground clearance, structure strength calculations (maximum wind and weight spans), conductor, insulator, and hardware strength calculations, conductor gallop analysis, and analysis of guyed and unguyed structures

PSE performs transmission design that is compliant with ANSI, IEEE, NESC, RUS, and other applicable or project-specific standards.

Distribution Line Design and Staking

A critical phase of every construction project is the field design and staking of the overhead and underground facilities. PSE’s line design personnel have extensive design and staking experience obtained through many years of field experience. PSE utilizes several state-of-the-art computer programs in the process of designing overhead line facilities, including PLS-CADD, PLS-Pole, StakeOut, Partner, Alcoa Sag10, and several programs developed in-house utilizing Microsoft Office Suite.

Distribution Line Design and Staking services include:

  • Complete and accurate design that complies with National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), state and local electrical codes, and Rural Utilities Service (RUS) requirements
  • Providing sag, tension, and stringing charts for each project
  • Reviewing joint use and foreign attachment load analysis
  • Reviewing conductor galloping on long spans

Many utilities have transitioned to electronic mapping systems with automated line design and staking software packages. PSE has experience with a variety of different software packages to accommodate each utility’s needs. By utilizing the software, our project information can be directly imported into your normal work order and material management flow, and GPS data can be imported directly into the electronic mapping system. Eliminating the conversion process saves you time and money.
