Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) & Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI)

Power System Engineering, Inc. (PSE) has developed a solid Automatic Meter Reading (AMR)/Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) business case and procurement process resulting from our extensive experience with many utilities across the country. This process results in the utility purchasing the right AMR/AMI system at a very competitive price.

AMR/AMI Procurement Process Steps

The following AMR/AMI evaluation steps may be chosen in total or in part:
  • Identify AMR/AMI requirements. We conduct a thorough needs analysis and gather information from all utility departments to ensure all utility stake holders are involved in the AMR/AMI decision.
  • Complete a detailed AMI feasibility business case resulting in a 15 year Net Present Value (NPV) analysis. We collect detailed financial and business operations facts that become assumptions in the model. Current meter operations costs are compared to future meter operation costs using AMR/AMI.
  • Evaluate and select the most appropriate AMR/AMI technology (power line carrier or fixed wireless) for the utility.
  • Evaluate wide area communications technologies and recommend the appropriate communications backhaul media for AMR/AMI.
  • Develop a request for proposal (RFP) based on our experience helping other utilities select an AMR/AMI system.
  • Solicit competitive proposals from select AMR/AMI vendors.
  • Evaluate AMR/AMI vendor responses and facilitate vendor presentations at the utility.
  • Oversee contract agreements and negotiate final pricing.
As an option, PSE offers project management services to help the utility during the initial phases of the AMR/AMI system deployment and ensure that the AMR/AMI system installation gets off to a smooth start.
