Automation Planning

Automation is a key part of a utility's success. Automation of the business process and systems can save significant dollars. Succeeding with automation initiatives begins with proper planning. It is necessary to properly consider the business case, technical feasibility, staff resources, and risks during the planning process.

Automation planning may be a focused effort on one application area, an overall multi-year automation plan, or part of the power delivery planning process. When planning the electric system, automation technology is one of many system improvement alternatives that may extend or leverage the life of the electric system or improve reliability.

The PSE team has helped utilities make well-informed decisions regarding automation initiatives. Crucial to the success of any planning activity is to have team members with expertise and recent experience on the subject matter being considered. PSE has a team of experts focused on utility automation.

Services PSE can provide include:
  • Prepare a multi-year automation plan with benefit analysis, needs review, budget estimates, staff resource impacts, technology assessment, utility comparisons, regulatory requirement review, schedule, priorities, and risk analysis.
  • Facilitate utility cross-functional team discussions and analysis of automation applications.
  • Work with participants from multiple utilities to potentially form joint initiatives where common interests exist. PSE has numerous examples of successful joint projects as a result of facilitating this planning step.
  • Present and lead a Workshop addressing automation planning and applications.
