Protocols

Communication protocols are "the language" with which equipment and software applications exchange information. A common example is DNP 3.0, which is often used to communicate between a SCADA master and RTU. Another common example is the Internet Protocol (IP), which is a core protocol for the Internet and most networks.

IP is well understood and there are many experts able to help utilities configure routers, firewalls, and other network equipment to achieve a working solution. When it comes to integrating substation and line equipment or software applications specific to the utility industry, the protocols and interface alternatives are not as widely understood, nor are the choices as clear.

PSE is experienced with helping utilities select, specify, and implement protocols and interfaces. The PSE team has been active for many years in automation projects involving a variety of protocols including DNP 3.0, UCA, ICCP, and legacy protocols. The PSE team is also knowledgeable about application or database integration protocols such as XML, HTML, SQL, and ODBC.

For SCADA and substation automation today, utilities might use DNP 3.0 (serial), DNP 3.0 over IP, or UCA 2.0 (IEC 61850) depending on communication media technology and other business objectives. Many utilities also must migrate over time from legacy protocols.

The PSE team has hands on implementation experience integrating many types of intelligent devices using DNP 3.0. Additionally, PSE was first involved in UCA 1.0 about 12 years ago and today is helping to advance and implement UCA 2.0, part of which is defined by IEC 61850, an international standard.

  • Leverage the availability of high-speed wide area networks and wireless IP networks to support network type protocol communications for utility automation applications.
  • Identify migration strategies to move from legacy technology to the standard protocols available today.
  • Prepare procurement specifications and help select vendors and products.
  • Work with utility network and IT personnel to arrive at an overall wide area and local area network design that gives users access to the data and applications they need.
  • Help identify system security issues and solutions.
  • Participate in system testing and troubleshooting.
