Broadband Power Line Communications (BPL)

The new generation of Power Line Communications, now known as Broadband Power Line Communications (BPL) utilizes the latest in modem and chipset technology to deliver high speed data transmission and broadband communications across an electric utility's medium and low voltage distribution system.

BPL is data transfer via new power line injection technology between the substation and the home. An important point is that no new wires need to be installed in the "last mile" and BPL takes advantage of the largest network on earth, the global power grid. Some of the BPL vendors will use unlicensed spread spectrum radio between the neighborhood transformer and the home (the last 1,000 feet).

  • Education and Training - A short course on BPL, delivered onsite or via web conference, is designed to provide your staff with BPL basics. The course includes a BPL technology overview, vendor overview, and the latest information on North American BPL trials. Our customized business cases typically include: BPL cost projections, revenues projections based on either a wholesale and/or retail BPL model, competition review to identify broadband access competitors in your area, a discussion of possible market entry strategies, service bundling/packaging and pricing strategies, a forecast of network savings and cost avoidance, and any other desirable business case elements deemed necessary.

PSE will work closely with your staff to make sure the right specifications are submitted to a qualified vendor pool, collect and analyze vendor responses, and help insure that your company makes the right BPL vendor choice.
