Utility Communications Consultant - Mobile Voice and Fixed Data

PSE has an opening in our Madison, WI office for a project management level person responsible for wide area communication studies and propogation activities focusing on land mobile radio (LMR) and fixed wireless design.

PSE leads technology and product selection projects of new privately owned mobile voice/data and fixed data systems for electric utilities. The tasks typically begin with defining the unique requirements, selecting the best technology, completing the radio design work, writing the RFPs for the vendors to bid on, and helping the utility select the best product to meet the requirements.

Applicants must have at least 10 years of experience completing design tasks for both LMR and fixed wireless. Having core expertise in the following areas is highly desired:

  • Capability to complete LMR propagation studies and design.
  • Expertise in any or all of the following technologies: Licensed radio 30 to 900 MHz, unlicensed 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz, 5.8 GHz, and licensed microwave.
  • Good understanding of the product trade-offs for fixed data and LMR.
  • Experience working with frequency coordinators to help clients obtain the needed licenses.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interface with clients in selling new work, completing strategy sessions with clients, writing proposals, specifications and RFPs and occasionally making industry presentations.

The selected individual will be working in a small team environment with other communication related experts. An engineering degree or technical degree and PE registration is preferred.

Utility Automation Consultant

PSE has an opening in our Madison, Wisconsin office for a Utility Automation Consultant to lead electric utility automation projects. Typical projects involve developing technology strategic plans for utilities and leading automation procurement initiatives involving: AMR/AMI, Mobile Workforce Management, Mobile Data, Land Mobile Radio, GIS, OMS, SCADA and other automation technologies. To be considered, candidates must also have a minimum of five years experience working with utilities with proven client interaction, interpersonal and business development skills. Individuals with BSEE, MSEE, or MBAs are highly desired.

IT Lead Consultant

As we continue to grow, we have a very attractive career opportunity for a Lead IT Consultant in our Madison, WI office to help expand PSE’s Utility Automation and Communications practice area. This position will be working with PSE’s small to mid-sized utility clients regarding developing strategies and deploying new IT related technologies. 

The Lead IT Consultant will consult with these utilities on server architecture, software maintenance practices, security, disaster recovery, and a variety of other IT related areas. The utility industry also involves several sophisticated private software programs that perform billing, outage management, metering, grid management, mapping, mobile service orders, and other expensive operational software. The private software systems require hardware architecture and sometimes cloud based solutions with well designed IT plans. This position will work closely with the private software packages and with traditional small business software such as Microsoft Office. There are also networking responsibilities for WANs.  This position is targeted at the hands-on IT individual who now wants to advance their hands-on IT skills into a consulting capacity.  

Responsibilities:

  • Support the ongoing business development efforts of PSE.
  • Assist with client communications and technology planning projects including requirements gathering, vendor analysis, and recommendations for IT infrastructure.
  • Assist with supporting PSE’s clients with technology procurement projects with utility specific automation programs.
  • Assess a client’s IT infrastructure to determine any gaps or weaknesses within the system (servers, desktops, etc.).
  • Identify IT business needs and recommend technology solutions for clients.
  • Manage various IT projects ranging in size and scope while staying within timelines and budget.
  • Write technical and procedural documentation for both technical and non-technical people.
  • Create documentation on disaster recovery plans.
  • Complete security penetration and/or assessment tests at a client site to verify security; capability to assess and then recommend a cyber-security strategy.
  • Capability to program and configure routers and switches.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5-10 years experience
  • Good listening skills in identifying client needs
  • Strong writing skills
  • Understanding of Windows Server 2000, 2003, and 2008 including Active Directory, Data, and SharePoint
  • Understanding of Windows Exchange 2003, 2007 and 2010
  • Understanding and preferably vendor certifications of switches and routers (ex. Cisco, HP, Adtran, Watchguard, SonicWall, etc.)
  • Understanding of network segmentation with VLANS for secure internet access for large office buildings, prioritize VoIP traffic, and enable multiple wireless networks
  • Understanding of Unified Threat Management to prevent virus, malware, and spyware infections
  • Experience with implementation of VoIP telephone systems is preferred
  • Experience working with various Telco and ISP providers to coordinate installations of voice and data lines
  • Experience with migration to SAN environments
  • Experience implementing firewalls
  • Ability to complete technical training for people with a variety of IT skill sets
  • Certifications with Microsoft, Cisco, and within cyber security is preferred

This individual will be responsible for leading efforts in providing a wide range of engineering and technical consulting services to PSE’s commercial and industrial clients in the region. The candidate must have a BSEE with a minimum of seven years of experience as well as an active professional engineer licenses registered with the South Dakota Board of Technical Professionals. The candidate shall be self-motivated and have experience in developing construction bid documents for commercial and industrial facilities. Design responsibilities include lighting design, power distribution design, conducting power quality studies, and performing coordination and arc flash studies. Working knowledge of applicable NEC, IEEE, and ANSI standards is highly preferred.

Marketing Coordinator

As we continue to grow, we have a very attractive career opportunity in our Madison, WI office for a Marketing Coordinator to help expand PSE’s overall client growth. The duties involve coordinating new material for PSE’s website, writing and editing promotional materials, proactively monitoring utility industry conference events for speaking and trade-show attendance, and assisting practice leaders with the administration of their practice level marketing programs.  This position will be reporting to a PSE Practice Leader in PSE’s Madison, WI office.    

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and edit PSE’s website content.
  • While using your graphic design skills, make modifications and improvements to existing materials.
  • Work closely with each department to assist in the administration of their individual marketing activities.
  • Coordinate activities for trade-shows.
  • Introduce a CRM program at PSE.
  • Assist the business office staff with a variety of ad hoc duties.
  • Support the ongoing business development efforts of PSE.
